Claire was born in Kilmarnock in 1964.
She grew up in Ayr - where she still lives- in a family of painters. She shared an
exhibition in September 2001 here at the Manor House Gallery with her father James. Her
mother - Elspeth - was a distinguished botanical artist who sadly died two years ago. In
1982 she went to the Glasgow School of Art, where the influence of the Scottish
Colourists is always present. Claire graduated in 1986. In 1991 Claire had her first solo
exhibition at the Gatehouse Gallery in Glasgow where she has exhibited regularly since.
Other solo exhibitions have been at the Christopher Hull Gallery and Bruton Street Gallery
in London and The Open Eye Gallery in Edinburgh. Claire was elected a Professional Member
of the RSW in 1992 and won the RGI James Torrance Award the same year. In 1996 she
won the RSA Latimer Award. Writing in the catalogue for her exhibition at the Gatehouse
Gallery in 1999 Adam Butler said....."Claire's palette is rich in range as well as
tone, using a mixture of acrylic and oil pastel, allowing her to produce her
characteristically luminous juxtapositions of colours. Her compositions are carefully
structured and despite the brilliant initial effect, a closer inspection reveals her use
of colour to articulate space, movement and balance. He joy and love of her painting and
subjects simmers close to the surface...." |
