 James  Somerville was born in 1936 in Cowdenbeath. He graduated from the Edinburgh College of Art and pursued a career in art education eventually becoming National Dvelopment Officer for Art and Design in the Scottish Department of Education. He retired from this work ten years ago and became a full-time painter living and working in Edinburgh. He has particpated in the annual exhibitions of the RSA and RSW and had several solo shows in Scotland. He shows at the Leith Gallery and the Richmond Hill Gallery.
